Data collection

I managed to do some work testing this weekend on the bare un attenuated sensor, its fairly overcast due to it being snowing being winter and all, the data goes from midnight to 6:00 pm. Seems to work fairly well so far although in the summer the intensity will probably saturate it completely. I will need to add a neutral density filter and amplify the signal.

The concept is relatively simple, essentially its a device that measures the radiative flux density of the sun.

The basic concepts simple, there are rather expensive scientific worldwide standards maintained that are designed to be very accurate and reproducible. Commercially produced models are calibrated against these under various classification standards. Not having access to one, the next best thing would be publicly available data recorded as geographically close as possible. Luckily the weather station at the airport in my city does take solar readings and provides live daily totals and monthly hourly totals.

The design:

There are 3 common types of pyranometers: photovoltaic, photodiode and thermopile. To start I went with a PIN type photodiode the BPW34 configured in a reverse bias mode. Since photodiodes performance is affected by temperature i threw in a TMP36 temperature sensor giving me -40 to 125c readings at +- 2 degrees of accuracy.

The short circuit amperage is roughly 1.86 milliamperes, with a bias voltage of 5 volts requires a resistor value of 2688.2 ohms. I used a 250 ohm 0.01% resistor along with a 5k screw turn potentiometer in series to provide an adjustable value.

This will provide a decent voltage response rate that will be easily measurable by an adc. The remainder of the electronics is an old arduino and a data logger shield i dusted off out from a drawer somewhere. 5 bolts reference with a 10 bit adc is about 0.005 volts resolution. Using an rtc for timing i figure making an averaged sampling once a second should do nicely.
}

Nothing special to look at here, 10 bit sampling means a 0 to 1023 value, the atmega 32 has 16 bit unsigned integers so that is 64 samples cast into a float for the division to prevent rounding errors during accumulation. I could do some weighted averages or something to get around the limitations but this is fine. Samples are performed once every 10 milliseconds for both light and temperature readings. There probably should be a delay between the two readings but as a rough evaluation this is fine to start with. The output is simply written to a csv date stamped to the start of acquisition.

The setup was pretty simple: an old brownie projector, a large screen and a Hi-8 camera. The result was adequate for the time, but required quite a bit post processing to clean up. Film can run at 16 to 18 ish frames a second while the camera ran at 24 static. The color was off, everything was either too dim or over exposed. Additionally when a frame is advanced it is blocked off momentarily to prevent blur during pull-down, this is made more periodic to make it less noticeable to the human eye but causes serious issues with video cameras recording at a faster rate. At the time it took me 6 months to process mpeg-2 video, having to clean up frames one by one at times. This was around 2005 and my phone now is several times more powerful than my computer was then, the results were pretty good considering the resources at hand.

Sometime afterwards I acquired an old 8/Super 8 projector and decided to take another crack at this, having squired 50 or so more reels that needed digitizing. The first step was to gut the entire projector of its electrical, fabricate a new takeup reel and make modifications to the film gate.

Gutting the projector was the easy part, other than the lamp housing and the transformer there was little else in this thing.

Regarding the film gate, a sizeable portion of the film is not seen on the projection. The image is cropped down so the perforations are not visible along with the intermediate region between frames. Since i want to capture as much of the film as possible I enlarged the gate as much as possible for both Super-8 and Regular-8 Film

The original take up reel was missing so I ended up adapting one from an old reel to reel magnetic tape player, it fits and the wobbly thing on the end that allows the reel to hold tension in one direction while allowing the projector to go in reverse works.

I decided fairly early on to use an arduino for the brains of the projector. There isn't much requirements wise: control the brightness of the bulb, advance to the next frame, load film so i picked a fairly cheap easy to program Arduino and a motor control shield and called it a day.

The lamp was a bit of a tight fit, i needed sufficient material to act as a heat sink while allowing for enough room for a reflector without it touching the claw down mechanism. I used a 5300K CREE X-RE led module in a small drop in module cut down to size bolted onto a 1/4 inch thick piece of aluminium that i managed to cut down and make fit.
In order to drive the LED properly I threw together a simple NPN sink drive circuit with a 10 ohm 2 watt resistor in series. Generally driving a power LED with a resistor for current limiting is a bad idea but in this case the load is so small the chance of overheating and the resistor allowing too much current is not a concern.

In order to advance by a single frame I needed a way of knowing when the claw mechanism finished pulling down the next frame, fortunately them main drive pulley controls this directly via a notch on the side that pushes down a little spring arm. So using a black mark on the drive wheel and a photo reflective sensor this is easily achieved.

The original switch control has a position for threading the film that moves some channels to get the film to bend in the right shape. Back when I did this I was lazy and didn't probe out the original switch so I ended up mounting a mechanical switch where I could detect the mechanical position instead.

Most of the hardware modifications ended up being straightforward however the camera took quite a bit time to get right. I ended up choosing a logitech c600 webcam for the imaging sensor, at the time it was the highest resolution 4:3 webcam available for end users. It took longer to find appropriate lenses that had a short enough focal point while being adjustable. I ended up going with a surplus machine vision 22mm lens that screwed into a brass bushing. The dimensions were perfect for it so slide into the mount that held the original projection lens. I glued the webcams lens mount to some scrap plastic that allowed the sensor to be centred in the bushing. The lens had a gear machined into it i ground off to make it fit flush to the projector.

I added a small heatsink to the lcd to try and keep it cool in an attempt to keep it cooler to reduce noise. No clue if it will help but doesn't hurt. The power supply is just an old atx psu i wired up for 12v and 3.3v power nothing special.

I still have to cut the barrels to length and drill out the holes, had to order in a 16mm drill bit to match the diameter of the barrels. Also i will be trying to get the motors to run, i have my doubts the low torque motors would be able to turn with the added weight but i don't see a problem in trying.dcroyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05804718695685286776noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3355744616402144655.post-4351340181026112392012-01-05T20:08:00.000-08:002012-01-05T20:08:00.680-08:00Projector Control Circuit Details I have received several requests for schematics and source code for the control system i built for my projector. After several months of delays and procrastinating here they are:

The circuit is relatively straightforward, the relay is sunk by an npn transistor... there is a protection diode to prevent any unfortunate kickback. The reset pin on the micro controller is puled up with a 1k resistor and there is a 0.01 uF capacitor to filter power. The micro controller listens for a control signal and a feedback signal is given by pulling it to ground using an npn transistor.

The code is extremely simple, the mcu waits for the control signal to be high for more than 250ms then enables the feedback signal and turns on the relay until the control signal goes low. The entire thing is in an infinite loop.

#include <htc.h>
#define _XTAL_FREQ 4000000

__CONFIG(MCLREN & UNPROTECT & BORDIS & WDTDIS & PWRTEN & INTIO);

void main()
{
TRISIO = 0b111010;
ANSEL = 0;
CMCON = 7;

while(1)
{
GPIO = 0b000000;
// wait for power on signal
for(int x = 0; x < 250; x++)
{
__delay_ms(1);
if(GPIO1 == 0) x = 0;
}
GPIO = 0b000101;
// wait for power off signal
while(GPIO1);

}
}dcroyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05804718695685286776noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3355744616402144655.post-46848882444549952852011-10-07T16:36:00.000-07:002011-10-07T16:36:37.174-07:00LED Projector Mark IIAfter completing my first led projector mod i was commissioned to do another one, with an even more powerful led this time

This time around i modified a phillips hopper sv10, which had a burned out polarizer i replaced earlier in the year. Thinking the interface would be identical because of the same manufacturer and they were similar models built around the wrong time, obviously i was wrong.

Instead of a heart beat signal and active low feedback the control signal was a simple active high pulse, feedback required a constant 5 volt line to be pulled down. Using my scope wasn't very helpful as i was expecting a squarewave signal (really need a second probe while im at it) but my new logic probe made quick sense of it.

This time around i used a 50 watt led, 32 - 36 volt power supply, reflector and a pack of credit card frenel lenses to play with.

I mounted the led exactly the same way as before: i removed the uhp bulb cage and hacked off a piece that screwed onto the rest of the assembly

Drilled small pilot holes for mounting the led

Then drilled and tapped for 6 - 32 screws

The plastic piece i hacked off was bolted to the top to mount the led at the perfect position.

A bit of thermal silicone to hold the led in place and give better thermal conductivity

And finally screw into place. My control board is nearly identical to my previous version, with the exception of the extra transistor used to pull the 5 volt line to ground

Im still in the process of testing different lenses but the credit card frenel lenses seem to do the trick... im a bit concerned that it might sag during prololged operation since it is just a piece of cheap plastic.
Time will tell i suppose, perhaps adding a fan to blow over the front of the led is a solution.

So far it is quite a bit brighter than the 25 watt led i previously used, but it does get much hotter and i will need to attach a fan directly to the heatsink i used, seems to get close to 45c right now but that is with the case open

I am unable to take proper pictures of the projector in action, everything i take with it is way to dim to make out most of the projected image

Nearing the completion of the project i had an accident: i dropped a screw while reassembling the projector which just had to hit a 400v 150uf capacitor which discharged onto the control interface cable and destroyed it... The projector survived, could turn on and off and would display fine through vga but i could not change any settings or inputs making the projector quite useless.

I guess its off ward to the next one, an eiko EIP-2500 DLP projector... i plan on taking the led system from the now failed mod and installing it into the dlp projector
My parents recently got a camper, which was a huge step up from a tent and considerably better than the cramped tent trailer from my childhood. One issue for myself was the lighting, almost all campers still use 12 volt incandescent bulbs, they bathe everything in a terrible orange glow and either are too dim or have a pathetic lamp life of less than 200 hours.

This simply would not do, my parents did not use the campers lights simply because the damn lights got too hot and melted the polycarbonate dome causing it to sag. They used too high a wattage bulbs but the ones that were rated for the fixture you could not even read by.

A quick bit of searching and i found appropriately sized cool white 108 lumen 12 volt led panels, they took forever to arrive but a a price of 2 dollars apiece on a bulk order in november i would not expect them to arrive any time soon anyways.

Considering the life expectancy of leds drops quite a bit at higher temperatures and that the panel would be enclosed i decided to add a heatsink. Mounting the lights ended up being easier, i simply broke the the glass and soldered the panel directly onto the wire that held the filament. The result was alot sturdier than i thought it would be and required no modification to the fixture. The heatsink was attached using some silicone thermal glue.
The leds get around 35c after being left on for an hour... considering that they will not be under continuous use and will only be used seasonally i would expect them to last the life of the camper.
A few of the led panels exhibit problems when they heat up

Channel one was toast and the tube was quite slow but it did its job for a year after i pulled it from a dumpster along with a few hundred pounds of industrial equipment.

It will be missed, although it has been replaced with a much faster and considerably smaller analog scope and a function generator. I stripped it for parts and scrap aluminum simply because i am moving in a few weeks and could not find a home for it. Lots of dials, switches, tubes, germanium diodes and whatnot inside but there was something that made absolutely no sense, a heavily shielded cable about 2 meters long stuffed inside of a shielded box labeled danger high voltage. It has 2 enameled wires inside tightly wound around a plastic core, i worked out that each wire had to be several kilometers long.

After some pondering i concluded that this had to be what was used for the storage component of the scope. It simply used the length of the cable to provide sufficient delay followed by amplifying the signal and feeding it back into the other end, an analog version of delay line memory.dcroyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05804718695685286776noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3355744616402144655.post-28284086564893144952011-08-12T16:38:00.000-07:002011-08-12T17:24:03.244-07:00POV ClockI found an interesting persistence of vision clock for a few dollars at a local thrift shop
Its a simple 8 led array on a thin piece of pcb held up by a spring with a magnet, a large coil pulls the array forward and the spring does the rest of the work, the base is a nice polished piece of aluminum... when running there is a surprising amount of rocking force so a heavy base makes sense

I recently acquired a cheap 200 watt solder pot to speed up disassembling old electronics, it took 600 grams of solder to fill... its quite deep, i might consider stretching the amount of solder using steel ball bearings if if have to refill it.

The element is regulated by a simple triac circuit, there is nothing to stop it from overheating and no real way to precisely control the temperature, also the base is small and the entire thing is top heavy when filled. After the solder is completely filled i turn it down almost as it can get, anything higher causes the solder to rapidly oxidize.

After an hour of messing around with it im pretty happy with the results, and i have a good future project of building a digital temperature control and a larger sturdier base, the electronics are currently right beside the element and will most definitely fail rather quickly if i let the thing overheat.
Control Board
High Power Led

The led and power supply came in, i wasn't expecting how bright these things would be. Everything came together perfectly somehow...

I mounted the led onto an aluminum heatsink with some screws and some thermal silicone adhesive, to mount the whole thing into the projector i removed the top part of the bulb cage and cut out the section that screwed onto the projector. I happened to have a collimator lens i salvaged from another projector that fit on top of the reflector, with the reflector and lens siliconed down it was ready to install. A note of warning, the power leds tend to have a silicone lens injected over them which is quite fragile and easily peeled off. I almost had this happen when my reflector came off and the silicone i used bonded to the lens!
Its not quite as bright as the uhp bulb but that could easily be fixed with an led with a higher output
The power supply was based on an st micro TSM101I voltage amperage controller, i used a simple hack using a 100k resistor and a 10k potentiometer to fine tune the amperage supply so the led isnt over driven and die prematurely.

At 1.7 amps the heatsink provided (if you can call a thin piece of aluminum one) got quite warm, i found an aluminum heatsink of the perfect dimensions. I siliconed the heatsink down so it wouldn't shift and mounted the power supply using silicone thermal adhesive

Testing

Surprisingly everything worked perfectly, the projector turned on and off just as it would before. A slight disappointment was the fact that the led was not as bright as i hoped it would be, it ended up producing an image about as half as bright as it originally did. This is with the brightness of the projector turned all the way up.

The projected image is a bit brighter and has proper color, my camera sucks for these types of situation.

Conclusion

For about 50 dollars (including consumables) i retrofitted the projector in about 2 hours of solid work and 4 or 5 hours of figuring out the basics of pic micro controllers. For a bit more money a much brighter led can he had that would make this more worthwhile. Considering how much longer an led will last compared to the ~2000 of a uhp lamp and the power savings. Power loss from the conversion taken into account powering the led comes to about 30 watts, one quarter of the power consumed by original bulb.dcroyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05804718695685286776noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3355744616402144655.post-17372825446335122752011-03-07T19:09:00.000-08:002011-03-07T19:09:35.291-08:00Projector LED ModI happen to have a stack of old Phillips 3 lcd projectors, the ones i repaired work great... but only until the uhp bulbs burn out and at a hundered bucks a pop minimum to replace, probably more considering the age of the projectors its really not worth the price

Now if i were to replace the uhp bulb and high voltage board with a high power led for a fraction of the price that would be worthwhile, especially considering how much longer the led will last compared to the 2000 or so hours from a uhp lamp.

Some quick poking around the insides of any of the projectors resulted in a 3 wire connection from the high voltage supply to the control board. Probing with a dmm showed 5 volt signals, further probing with an oscilloscope showed that the control board pulses a high signal to start the hv board which gives a constant low while the bulb is running. While the bulb is active the control board gives a continuous pulsed signal, when that signal stops the bulb is turned off.

Pretty straightforward so far, 40 $ worth of parts are on their way and i have already figured out how i am going to implement control using a pic micro controller.
Most drivers you can fins will only provide enough power to light a few feet of EL wire and drive at a static frequency. I wanted to observe the color shift that occurs when driving at higher frequencies.

The circuit is a simple 555 timer in astable mode with a 10k potentiometer to adjust the working frequency from around 150 to 3000 hertz. The output is used to switch a tip122 power transistor which sinks a transformer that produce close to 100 volts ac. Please note that many audio transformers are potted with a low melting point wax and can get warm enough to leak and fill the holes of your breadboard!
I am having trouble with the 40x and 100x objectives though, i am quite sure that the focusing strength of the lenses are high enough that i need to position the sensor even further back. I made this assumption when i looked at the camera configurations for trinocular microscopes. So far im getting some awesome results, going even further i purchased a slide micrometer to determine the scale.
In that time i have collected over a hundred eproms and i really should do something with them. I already have a chip programmer but lack the necessary eraser needed to prepare the chips for programming.

Naturally i went online to see what was out there... for 5 to 20 dollars i could get an eraser with a capacity of 2 or 3 chips. That won't do the trick if i want to batch test a few hundred of these things. The solution came when i found an old florescent blacklight in the corner, it drives f15t8 bulbs and i can easily get g15t8 bulbs which emit light in the crucial UVC spectrum.

The only real issue is the fact the UVC spectrum is very dangerous, enough to cause burns to the skin and your retina! I chose to use a cheap metal toolbox as an enclosure and sealed every seam to prevent light from escaping.

The rest was just dismantling the old light for the parts i needed and bolt them to the inside of the toolbox.

Also i added a tiny plastic window so i could see if the bulb was working, UVC light won't pass though, pretty much the only thing it will pass though is quartz. Everything works fine so far, it takes about 7 minutes to erase a 27c512 eprom. I will run more detailed tests when i have the free time.

my plan is to have the entire thing mechanized along the x,y and z axis so that i can do precise focus stacked images and stitch them together for one obscenely large closeup of whatever i can get my hands on, for a cheap x,y bed i bolted together a matched set of CD Rom assemblies and epoxied the bolts for extra support

I started out with a cheap pvc conduit box and built a mounting system that could be adjusted in all directions, i drilled out holes and epoxied bolts down so that i could thread bolts in each corner. then thread locked bolts on each end and epoxied rare earth magnets. The idea was to hold a sheet of steel or plastic while allowing freedom to center the sensor. Regular epoxy did not hold very well to either the bolts or the pvc so i used jb weld. It worked out quite well since i need a fair bit of control over the amount of magnification. To prevent light reflecting on the inside i spray painted the entire thing flat black
I decided to go with a standard m42 lens, they use a standard threaded mount and it is easy to pick up a suitable lens for a decent price. I picked up a cheap adapter that allows a m42 lens to be used with a different camera mount, filed down the bayonet tips on the back and used it for a flange to mount the lens . I made the mistake of not having enough distance between the lens and had to use extension tubes to increase the distance.
For the lens i picked up a Helios 44-2 for 30 dollars including shipping, with a focal distance of 58mm and a manual aperture of f16 down to f2.8.
I went with a logitech c600 webcam, it was the best fixed focus one i could get. At 1600*1200 video resolution at ~15 frames per second im not complaining. After gutting the camera and removing the lens i simply mounted it on a square of thick plastic with some hot glue, it is held on by rare earth magnets on either side. For my first test subjects i used my large collection of eproms, my first tests allowed me to see the NEC logo and manufacturer's code on an old 8051 micro controller. Quartz windows do unfortunately give a bit of distortion, also the depth of field is very narrow. I'm building a cross slide to properly hold and focus with this thing. So far i have been focusing manually by sliding it back and forth until the target comes into focus and gently nudge the camera the rest of the way.
